A man was attacked with pepper spray and a knife in the Jaitala area under Imamwada police station limits in Nagpur, in what police say was the fallout of an old rivalry. His mother and brother were also injured when they rushed to help him.

Police have arrested the accused, Vinay Meshram, and his sister Anchal Meshram, in connection with the attack. Their brother, Vicky Meshram, who allegedly stabbed the victim, is still absconding, and police are searching for him.

The attack stemmed from an old dispute between Vicky Meshram and the injured man, Tushar Sahare, that began over a bike scrape a few days earlier. The two had clashed before as well, with Vicky attacking Tushar back in 2018. The rivalry between them had continued to flare up intermittently since then.

On the day of the attack, a Sunday, both men attended the birthday celebration of a mutual acquaintance. The old rivalry resurfaced there, and Vicky hurled abuses at Tushar. Fearing the situation would escalate, Tushar left the venue and went home.

Around 12:30 am, Tushar was standing alone near his house when Vinay Meshram arrived with his sister Anchal. The two sprayed pepper spray into his eyes from behind, leaving him unable to react. Vicky Meshram then attacked him with a knife, leaving him seriously injured.

Seeing his condition, Tushar's brother and mother rushed to help him, but the accused attacked them with stones as well, injuring both. All three accused then fled the scene, leaving the area tense.

Police have arrested Vinay Meshram and Anchal Meshram. Vicky Meshram, who carried out the actual knife attack, remains at large, and police are working to trace and detain him at the earliest.
