Doctors at the Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation's Juchandra centre treated the premature baby free of cost; the child now weighs 1 kg 625 g.
Doctors at the Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation's Matabal Dekhbhal Kendra (mother and child care centre) in Juchandra have saved a newborn who weighed just 625 grams. The baby was born well before term and was in a very fragile condition after birth. After 82 days of treatment, the child's weight has now reached 1 kg 625 grams. Notably, the entire treatment at the civic hospital was provided free of cost.
The baby was born on August 10, 2026, weighing only 625 grams. Because of the extremely low weight, the child had difficulty breathing and was at risk of infection, and keeping the body temperature under control was also a major challenge.
The baby was admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit of the centre. Under the supervision of Medical Superintendent Dr Gayatri Gorakh and paediatrician Dr Anju Tiwari Shukla, a team of doctors, nurses and health workers gave the baby special treatment and kept watch over the child for 82 days continuously.
With the right medicines, nutrition and round-the-clock medical care, the baby's health improved gradually. The weight, which was 625 grams at birth, is now 1 kg 625 grams. In other words, the baby has gained a full kilogram in these 82 days.
On this achievement, Health Committee chairperson Nilesh Deshmukh, committee members Dr Shubhangi Patil, Ashish Vartak and Aruna Dabre, and Medical Health Officer Dr Bhakti Chaudhari visited the hospital. They praised the medical team.
On the occasion, Mr Deshmukh said that such treatment at a private hospital could cost lakhs of rupees, whereas the civic hospital provided the entire medical service free. He also said that municipal hospitals conduct an average of 10,000 safe deliveries every year and are proving to be a boon for ordinary people.
