A 38-year-old furniture maker died after jumping into the right canal of the Pench project at Ghorpad in Kamptee, a month after his wife left with their son.

Nagpur: A 38-year-old man died after jumping into the right canal of the Pench project at Ghorpad in Kamptee. He had been mentally distressed since his wife left home with their two-and-a-half-year-old son.

The deceased has been identified as Kunal Mukundrao Wagh (38), a resident of the area near Bhavani Mandir in Pardi. Kunal ran a furniture-making business and lived with his mother and two brothers.

About a month ago, following a domestic dispute, his wife had gone to her parents' home with their two-and-a-half-year-old son. Since then Kunal had been mentally disturbed and was unable to come to terms with the situation in the family.

On Wednesday at 8 am, Kunal left home after telling his mother. At around 12 noon, he jumped into the Pench project canal at Ghorpad Shivar on the Nagpur-Kamptee road. Some passers-by saw him jump into the canal and informed New Kamptee police.

Police and a fire brigade team reached the spot soon after. Led by Sub-Inspector Satish Pawar, Akshay Tirpude, an officer of the Kamptee Municipal Council fire brigade, and team members Amit Borkar, Rahul Rangari, Praful Gharde and Rupesh Pipalpagar began a search of the canal. Kunal's body was recovered about 200 metres from the spot.

The family was plunged into grief at the news. New Kamptee police have registered a case of accidental death.
