The countdown to the 2027 men's ODI World Cup, counted among the biggest events in cricket, officially begins on Thursday. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced a launch event in Cape Town on Thursday.

The 2027 ODI World Cup will be played in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia from October 2 to November 21. The tournament has 14 teams and will comprise 57 matches at 12 host venues. The event announcing the schedule will be broadcast live in India at 8.30 pm on the Jio Hotstar and Star Sports networks. It is being held at Zeitz MOCAA, Cape Town's museum of contemporary art.

Along with the schedule, the ICC will also launch a global ticket ballot. It will give cricket fans around the world a chance to get tickets for World Cup matches.

Ten of the 14 teams had qualified directly by the cut-off date of September 30. Hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe got direct entry. India, Australia, England, New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Bangladesh have also qualified. The remaining four places will be decided at a global qualifier early next year. West Indies, two-time World Cup winners, will also have to play the qualifier.

The 2027 World Cup could be the last of their international careers for Indian batting stars Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Speaking to Jio Star, Rohit recalled the 2024 T20 World Cup win and said he wanted to enjoy another such innings in the 50-over format.

Rohit said winning a World Cup for India is an extremely special moment. He said India has the experience of winning the T20 World Cup twice. In 2007 he was a young player of just 20, while in 2024 India won an ICC title after a long gap.

Kohli said the 2027 World Cup would be his last for India and was a big motivation for him. He added that he wanted to give everything on the field. His aim is to help India win the World Cup, and he will try to do whatever it takes.

The ICC's free ticket ballot will run from October 1, 2026 to November 21, 2026. Fans can request a maximum of four tickets per match across all categories. If demand for tickets exceeds stadium capacity, tickets will be allocated through a computerised random draw.
