Highway Traffic Police data show 26,915 road accidents in the state from January to September 2026, of which 10,444 were fatal.

A total of 11,326 people died in road accidents in Maharashtra between January and September 2026, just nine months, according to the latest figures released by the road wing of the Maharashtra Highway Traffic Police.

Highway Traffic Police data show that 11,912 people died in road accidents in the state between January and September 2025. The figure for the same period this year is 11,326, which is 586 fewer deaths than last year. Even so, more than 11,000 deaths in nine months is a very serious and worrying matter.

The data show that Maharashtra recorded 26,915 road accidents in all from January to September 2026. Of these, 10,444 were fatal. The Highway Police's analysis lists speeding, disregard of traffic rules, and dangerous and unsafe conditions on roads among the reasons behind the accidents.

The situation in Mumbai, the state capital, is also not good. In these nine months, the city recorded 248 fatal accidents in which 260 people died. Traffic control, basic facilities and road safety measures in Mumbai therefore need more serious attention.

The Highway Police have suggested some key measures to check the situation. These include installing safety railings on dangerous roads, putting up proper signboards, fixing black spots, meaning places prone to accidents, and fixing speed limits around schools and enforcing them strictly.

It is also very important that the injured get immediate medical help after an accident, that is, treatment within the golden hour. Along with the administration's measures, if drivers also drive responsibly, this loss of life can be prevented.
