Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram inaugurated the decorative illumination on Pune's three traditional market roads, now in its third year.
Pune, October 29, 2026: Decorative lighting on Laxmi Road, Kumthekar Road and Bajirao Road, the traditional market streets that give Pune's bazaars their distinct identity, was inaugurated on Thursday. Pune Municipal Corporation Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram performed the inauguration.
The initiative is being held for the third consecutive year. It has been put together jointly by the Pune Vyapari Mahasangh, the United Retail Trade Garment Association and the Pune Saraf Association. The lights cover a stretch of roughly three kilometres. The aim is to create a festive atmosphere in the markets during Diwali and to showcase Pune's rich cultural tradition.
Speaking at the event, Ram said: "Pune is the cultural capital. The importance of traditional markets remains even today. In places like Europe, people prefer to stroll through the streets of the city, see its beautiful spots, taste local food and shop at good stores, rather than just going to malls. There is ample scope for such a culture in Pune too. Pune is a city with an environment that suits such experiences."
He said Ganeshotsav and Navratri are celebrated with great enthusiasm in Pune, and Diwali too holds special importance. He added that the decorative lighting put up jointly by trade associations to bring cheer to the markets during the festive season adds to the city's festive atmosphere.
The commissioner also pointed out that the contribution of trade associations is not limited to such initiatives. He noted that whenever the city faces a crisis or needs help, the trading community always steps forward and lends wholehearted support.
Milind Shalgar, secretary of the United Retail Trade Garment Association, said: "Pune has a rich cultural heritage. Traders take part enthusiastically in preserving this tradition. With the aim of raising the festive spirit in the markets during Diwali and giving citizens a pleasant shopping experience, traders decided to come together and put up decorative lighting every year. Pune has had the honour of starting this kind of initiative, and other cities are now seen following it."
The lights are again shining this Diwali on all three roads, Laxmi Road, Kumthekar Road and Bajirao Road. Citizens visiting this part of the traditional markets during the festive days will be able to see the illumination.
