A nine-month-old boy thrown from a skywalk in Ghatkopar died on Tuesday during treatment at Sion Hospital. The shocking incident came to light yesterday, October 26. A quarrel broke out between the husband and wife, and in anger the father threw the child down. The child had suffered a deep head injury. His death was recorded at the hospital today.

According to police, the incident took place on the skywalk near Ghatkopar railway station. Acting on a complaint by the child's mother, Aarti Shaikh, Ghatkopar police have arrested her husband, Jafar Shaikh. Police took the accused into custody at 4.08 am on October 26.

The complainant, Aarti Jafar Shaikh, is 22 and lives in the Sarvodaya Nagar area of Ghatkopar. She married Jafar Shaikh, 23, about two years ago. The couple have a son, Aarav, who was nine months old. Jafar is said to sell clothes in the area.

According to the information available, Jafar is addicted to drugs, and for this reason the couple had been quarrelling repeatedly for the past few months. They had also had a heated argument on Sunday, after which the incident took place.

At around 10 pm on Sunday, Aarti was standing on the skywalk in the station area with her nine-month-old child. Jafar arrived there and began quarrelling with his wife again. In the middle of the argument, Jafar tried to take the child away with him. Aarti tried to stop him. Enraged, Jafar allegedly threw his nine-month-old son off the skywalk. The incident caused panic in the area.

Seeing the child fall, Aarti rushed down. With the help of people nearby, she first took the injured child to Rajawadi Hospital. His condition was critical, so he was referred to Sion Hospital for further treatment. He died there today.

Police said cases have previously been registered against the accused at the Mankhurd and Nehru Nagar police stations, including one under the NDPS Act. CCTV footage from the spot is currently being examined. Ghatkopar police are investigating the case further.
