Mumbai woke to a hazy sky and humid air on Monday, October 26. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast dry weather for Mumbai, Thane and Palghar for the next 24 hours. Temperatures are expected to stay high in the city and suburbs, with the maximum likely to touch about 36 degrees Celsius.
The haze has also drawn attention to air quality. Mumbai's overall Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 114 on Monday morning, which falls in the moderate category.
According to the IMD, skies over Mumbai and the suburbs will be mostly clear during the day, with some clouds at intervals. The maximum temperature is expected to be around 36 degrees, while the minimum may stay in the mid-20s.
IMD data showed a minimum temperature of 26.2 degrees Celsius at Colaba on Monday, and 22.5 degrees at Santacruz. No rain fell at either observatory, and rainfall was recorded at 0.0 mm.
Temperatures stayed high across Mumbai during the day. The Colaba observatory recorded a maximum of 35 degrees Celsius, while Santacruz recorded 36.5 degrees. The heat, humidity and hazy sky may cause discomfort in some parts of the city. People should keep drinking water and avoid staying out long in the afternoon heat, especially during outdoor work.
Mumbai's overall AQI was 114 on Monday morning. The figures are from the Central Pollution Control Board's SAMEER app. Under the national AQI classification, readings between 101 and 200 are counted as moderate.
Readings differed between stations. Colaba recorded an AQI of 167, followed by Bandra-Kurla Complex at 155 and Deonar at 134. Worli recorded 145, Andheri 121 and Borivali 95. This suggests air conditions vary from area to area. High levels of haze and pollution in warm, dry weather remain a concern.
The AQI also varied across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. According to the data given, Thane recorded 127, Navi Mumbai 103 and Kalyan 97. Under the national classification, readings between 51 and 100 are considered satisfactory, while 101 to 200 are moderate. Thane and Navi Mumbai were therefore in the moderate category, and Kalyan's reading was in the satisfactory category.
