In a cricket match at Five Gardens, a boy hit the ball high over the bowler's head, one of the sights of the week.
Last Thursday, the Tarq gallery in Navsari Building near D N Road felt like a new kind of laboratory, with plenty of conversation about ideas. The occasion was the launch of the book "The State of Architecture: Practices and Processes in India: A Research Framework", edited by Kaiwan Mehta, Ranjit Hoskote and Rahul Mehrotra. All three editors were present. Nancy Adajania moderated the discussion, which ranged from the role of architecture today to how new talent should take on responsibility in the years ahead. Students of architecture and design, young architects and many well-known Mumbai figures attended.
The second part of the evening belonged to the Charles Correa Foundation Gold Medal. Before the discussion with jury members Rahul Gore and Qaid Doongerwala began, Charles Correa's daughter Nondita Correa Malhotra shared several anecdotes about her father. She said how keen he was on nurturing new talent. This is the 29th year of the medal, and Correa himself designed it.
Gore and Doongerwala were pleased that thesis entries came in large numbers from architecture schools across the country. They also welcomed the appearance this time of new themes such as caste, gender and marginalised communities.
The gold medal went to Radhakrishnan M S of the CEED APJ Abdul Kalam School of Environmental Design in Kochi. His thesis was on rethinking energy infrastructure as a space for citizen participation. Manu Viswam of the College of Architecture, Thiruvananthapuram, received an honourable mention for his thesis "Urban Scar to Social Commons".
On to music. Artists Rushil Ranjan and Aabi Sampa worked earlier this year on their memorable debut at the Royal Albert Hall with A R Rahman. After a wait of six years, the duo is bringing their widely acclaimed Orchestral Qawwali Project (OQP) to Mumbai on December 13. The performance will be held at a venue in Sahar. It is part of Rooh Baru, a new IP from Cultural (Mis)fits and BAE, where South Asian and Western musical traditions will meet.
Finally, a search for Laddu ahead of Diwali. The friendly dog of Worli Sea Face is known as the "Marathon Dog" and likes to accompany runners and festival processions. He has been missing since October 17. Aditya Natarajan, who looks after him, said Laddu was geo-tagged last year after a similar incident. During Durga immersion he was last tracked near the Mahalaxmi temple, after which the geotag malfunctioned. His location is now said to be somewhere between Grant Road and Byculla. Anyone who sees Laddu can call 9820613540.
