Man held in Delhi for stealing Rs 5 lakh gold chain from Kandivali jewellery shop
Kandivali police have arrested a 42-year-old man from Delhi's Uttam Nagar, about a year after a gold chain worth Rs 5 lakh was stolen from a jeweller's shop.
Kandivali police have arrested Satish Kumar Krishnaprasad Kesari, 42, from Delhi. He lives in Uttam Nagar in the city. He is accused of stealing a gold chain worth Rs 5 lakh from a jewellery shop in Kandivali West, Mumbai.
The accused is originally from Bihar and holds a BTech degree in computer science. He is said to have dreamt of becoming an IAS officer and prepared for the UPSC examination while working, but did not succeed.
He then tried his luck on the popular TV show "Kaun Banega Crorepati". He got only as far as the "Fastest Finger First" round, so his dream of sitting in the hot seat remained unfulfilled.
He later suffered heavy losses in a travel business and his debts kept mounting. It is now learnt that when repaying the loans became difficult, he turned to crime as a shortcut.
He is alleged to have visited well-known jewellers' shops posing as a customer, looking at jewellery and stealing it when he got the chance. Having succeeded this way at first, he is alleged to have kept to the same method.
On November 15 last year, he went to Padmavati Jewellers on Mathuradas Road in Kandivali West. A gold chain weighing 43.2 grams, valued at Rs 5 lakh, was stolen from there.
The jeweller complained to the police. The accused is alleged to have prepared forged documents and produced a fake identity card to evade the police. After the theft, he also switched off his mobile phone and went straight to Delhi.
Kandivali police traced him using several CCTV clips and technical evidence. On the basis of this evidence, Mumbai Police raided a location in Delhi and arrested Satish. Police have seized the gold chain from him. The arrest comes about a year after the incident.
