A woman pulled the key from a police bus carrying detained protesters at Jantar Mantar in Delhi on Sunday, leaving police to push the vehicle.
A scene at Jantar Mantar in Delhi on Sunday left everyone present stunned. During a protest, a woman took the key out of a police bus carrying protesters and ran off. Police personnel could only look on. A video of the incident is now going viral on social media.
A large protest was under way at Jantar Mantar against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, with the protesters demanding his resignation. As the crowd had swelled, police had detained some protesters and were preparing to take them away in a bus. All the protesters were seated in the bus.
Just as police were about to start the bus, a woman ran up to it. She reached in on the driver's side, pulled out the key and walked away. Without the key, the bus could not move an inch, and the police were left helplessly watching.
A second video, showing what followed, has also surfaced. Without the key, the police themselves had to push the large bus forward. The video clearly shows police personnel pushing the bus in the harsh sun.
As soon as the videos emerged, people began discussing them. Some say what the woman did took great courage, and that she used her wits to upset the police plan. Many say she did it to save her fellow protesters.
Others call it wrong. They say that running off with the key of a government vehicle could be an offence. People are asking whether legal action can be taken, and there is also talk that a case could be registered against her for obstructing a public servant in the course of duty.
A huge crowd had gathered at Jantar Mantar on Sunday, and a very large police deployment was in place. Police said the protest was initially peaceful but the situation worsened later. According to police, the protesters began breaking barricades, and a clash followed when police tried to stop them.
Fifteen Delhi Police personnel were injured in the clash. Police have detained about 110 protesters. The atmosphere had become very tense, and there was a heated exchange between police and protesters.
There is as yet no information on whether a search for the woman is on. The video of her taking the key could be used as evidence. It remains to be seen what action police take in the matter and whether they are able to catch her.
