WhatsApp is working on a new feature, according to information that has surfaced. When a call comes from an unknown number, WhatsApp itself will ask the caller why the call is being made. The feature is believed to be rolled out soon.

WhatsApp keeps bringing updates and features to improve privacy and the calling experience for its crores of users. Some time ago, the company introduced a feature called Silence Unknown Callers. It is now considering upgrading that feature further.

With the new feature, users will also be able to read a transcript and decide for themselves whether the call needs to be answered. According to some recent reports, the feature is currently being developed in the Android app. Later, it could become part of WhatsApp's call-filtering system. It has not yet been made available even to beta testers, and the company has not announced a release date.

Reports say the call-filtering menu in WhatsApp's privacy section could be changed with a new option. Users could get three options: Never, Silence and Ask for Calling.

The first option is Never. If it is chosen, call filtering will be completely off and all calls will come through in the usual way.

The second option is Silence. If it is chosen, calls from unknown numbers will not ring. However, details of the calls will appear in the Calls tab and in notifications.

The third option is Ask for Calling. Once it is chosen, WhatsApp will ask the person calling from an unknown number the reason for the call. After getting a reply, the user can decide whether to answer or cut the call.

The feature will also show a text transcript of the caller's reply. This will let users understand, without picking up the phone, whether the call is about something important.
