Room-wise estimates for a 2 BHK interior range from Rs 25,000 for painting to Rs 3.5 lakh for a modular kitchen, with size, materials, city and access shaping the final bill.

A 2 BHK home looks spacious on an empty plan, but the picture changes once wardrobes, beds, sofas and kitchen cabinets go in. Sometimes a bedroom door hits the wardrobe, and sometimes the living room feels tighter than expected. Experienced interior designers therefore check such small things before finalising a design. The aim is a home that is comfortable and functional, with costs under control.

How much the budget comes to depends on several factors. Not every home needs the same work. A recently handed-over apartment may need only essential fittings, while an older house may also need electrical changes, repairs and fresh finishing.

The size and layout of the home come first. Larger rooms take more material and furniture, and awkward corners or uneven walls may need separate custom work. Among materials, a laminate finish usually costs less than premium veneer or acrylic. The quality of hinges, drawer channels and handles also affects the price.

Full-height wardrobes, loft cabinets and built-in shelves make good use of space, but they raise the cost of material and fittings. Extra sockets, concealed wiring and layered lighting also add to the bill, especially when old points have to be shifted. Changing the flooring, or the plumbing and electrical layout, can push the budget up considerably. Before choosing decorative items, it is important to understand what the home actually needs.

The city makes a difference too. Even with the same design, the price of work can differ from city to city, because labour, availability of materials, transport and installation conditions all matter. For Bengaluru families who need a separate desk to work from home, a well-planned work-from-home corner is a big help. In Mumbai, where rooms are small, smartly built wardrobes and multipurpose furniture come in useful. People working with interior designers in Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad and Pune may face local issues of their own.

Access in an apartment building also has to be considered. Restrictions on lift use, society permission and limited working hours can change the schedule for deliveries and installation. Quotations should therefore be compared not just on the final figure but on the work they include.

The estimated costs are as follows: Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 3.5 lakh for a modular kitchen, depending on cabinet size, finish, hardware and accessories. Wardrobes cost Rs 80,000 to Rs 2 lakh, depending on the number of units, internal fittings and shutter material. The living room costs Rs 75,000 to Rs 2 lakh, covering the TV unit, storage, seating and a feature wall. A bedroom costs Rs 1 lakh to Rs 2.5 lakh, including the bed, side tables, wardrobe and study desk. Lighting and ceiling work costs Rs 40,000 to Rs 1.2 lakh, and painting and finishing Rs 25,000 to Rs 60,000, depending on surface preparation, paint quality and repairs.

A basic interior estimate usually covers only essential fittings and working storage. A full interior can turn expensive when custom-made furniture, premium finishes and heavy decoration are added. Neither is a fixed price. The final estimate depends on the condition of the home and the work agreed.

The design should suit the needs of the people who live in the home, not just look good in photographs. Parents of young children will want easy access to storage and safe furniture for children to play around. For older people, safe pathways and proper lighting work well. Pet owners may prefer durable surfaces and fabrics that are easy to clean. Bonito Designs' Life Design approach stresses how a family lives and what it needs from every space.

To avoid wasteful spending, some decisions should be made at the start. Set aside the budget first for everyday essentials such as the kitchen, wardrobes and lighting, and think of decoration afterwards. Finalise the design early, because once cabinets are in production, changing the size or finish can mean extra charges and delay. Keep about 10-15% of the planned budget in reserve to deal with sudden problems on site or necessary changes. Also check whether loose furniture, appliances, curtains and decorative lights are included in the quotation, as they make a clear difference to the total cost.

Before approving a quotation, ask for a separate breakdown for each room, material specifications, construction drawings, the payment schedule and the delivery time. Read the warranty terms and exclusions just as carefully. A cost calculator can give an idea of the budget based on the size of the home, the rooms chosen and the materials, but it cannot account for all site conditions and customisation. It is better to start planning before possession or before renovation begins, so that there is enough time to settle measurements, layout, materials and budget.
