Two new tigers have arrived at the Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park at Katraj in Pune. The pair, brought from the Gorewada Wildlife Rescue Centre in Nagpur, comprises a four-and-a-half-year-old male and a three-and-a-half-year-old female. Both reached Pune on Thursday (October 15).

The two tigers had been rescued from incidents of human-wildlife conflict. They will now get a safe environment at the zoo in Pune.

The number of tigers at the Gorewada centre had exceeded its capacity, so a decision was taken to shift some of them to other zoos. The Central Zoo Authority (CZA) in New Delhi approved the move of these two tigers to Pune.

Accordingly, the required veterinary examinations and other formalities were completed at 5 pm on Wednesday (October 14), and both tigers were handed over to the Pune team. A team led by veterinary officer Ghanshyam Mohan Pawar brought them to Pune. They reached the zoo on Thursday, taking its total number of tigers to six.

Zoo director Dr Rajkumar Jadhav said the tigers will be kept in quarantine for three to four weeks. They will then undergo a health check-up and only after that be housed with the other tigers.

The new tigers have not yet been named. They will be placed with the other tigers only if the quarantine period ends and the health check-up findings are favourable.
