The killing of Pradeep Purnekar, a divisional chief of the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) in Thane, has heated up the political climate. There is now a fresh development in the case. State Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik visited the Purnekar family at their home and consoled them.
During the visit, the family voiced regret that Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde had not yet come to meet them. On hearing this, Sarnaik immediately phoned Shinde and put Pradeep Purnekar's son, Ram Purnekar, on a direct call with him. During the conversation, Ram demanded strict action against Meenakshi Shinde.
Since the killing, the Purnekar family has been demanding justice. The Shiv Sena led by Shinde is also facing criticism over the case. Allegations and counter-allegations have begun in Thane. Against this backdrop, Sarnaik's visit, the phone conversation he arranged with Shinde and the issue of the threat have become significant.
Another shocking matter emerged during the visit. Sarnaik was told that a threatening message had arrived on the mobile phone of Pradeep Purnekar's niece, Khushboo Purnekar. Khushboo said she had received a message to the effect of "Next Target tu...". On hearing this, Sarnaik immediately gave instructions on the family's security. Directions were issued to provide 24-hour security to the family members and outside their house. The message has brought the question of the family's safety back into discussion.
Speaking to the family, Sarnaik assured them of support in getting justice. He alleged that the incident was being politicised. He said some people were trying to gain political mileage from the case. He explained that he could not visit earlier, despite wanting to, because of the atmosphere created after the killing. Saying that the Shiv Sena had grown big because of the contribution of the Agri community, he said: "We share in the Purnekar family's grief and stand firmly behind them."
Sarnaik said the guilty in the case should face strict action. He assured the family that the main accused would not be shielded, whoever that may be. He also expressed readiness to engage the biggest lawyer for the court battle. He said the family would be given whatever help was needed so that the accused get stringent punishment. The final decision on the guilt and punishment of the accused will, however, come only after the judicial process.
Sarnaik also tried to reassure the family about Shinde's support. He said he had come to visit with Shinde's permission. "Do not harbour any misunderstanding about Shinde; he is fully behind you," he said. He also made clear that the Shiv Sena stands with the Purnekar family and that efforts would be made to get them justice. All eyes are now on the investigation, the security being given to the family and possible action against those concerned.
