A man snatched a bag containing Rs 50,000 and documents from a retired man returning from a bank in Gittikhadan, Nagpur; CCTV footage is being examined.
A robbery took place in broad daylight in the Gittikhadan police station area of Nagpur. A man snatched a bag from an elderly man who was returning home after withdrawing his pension from a bank, and fled. The bag held Rs 50,000 in cash and some important documents. The incident caused panic in the area.
Police have registered a case on the complaint of Dnyaneshwar Naik, a resident of Radiant Apartment in Nagbhoomi Society, Deepak Nagar. Naik is retired from government service and lives in the apartment with his family.
He had to withdraw money from his pension account. At around 2 pm, he went to the Indian Bank branch in the Friends Colony complex and withdrew some money. He put Rs 50,000 of it in a handbag and kept the rest in his pocket.
After leaving the bank, he came to the main road and took an auto-rickshaw home. He got off in front of the apartment and had just reached the lift when an accused approached from behind. The man is described as aged between 30 and 35. He snatched the bag from Naik's hand and ran off.
Naik ran after him but lost his balance and fell on the road. By then the accused had got on to his two-wheeler and fled. Besides the cash, the bag held a chequebook, a passbook and a PPO (pension payment order) book.
Naik gave police a full account of the incident. Police suspect that the accused had been following him from the bank. It is believed that he had parked his moped outside the apartment with the engine already running and entered the compound quietly. He probably kept the vehicle started, which is why he vanished within a few seconds with the bag.
The entire incident was captured on CCTV cameras installed at the apartment. Police are going through the footage and trying to identify the accused. They are searching for him actively.
