A movement against rising prices, climbing fuel costs and problems in the education system turned violent in France on Saturday, October 17. Thousands of people have taken to the streets, and the situation has deteriorated most in the southern city of Marseille.
The war in the Middle East has deepened the oil crisis worldwide. Oil is linked to many things in everyday life, so its effects are being felt in different sectors. Prices of essential goods have risen across the world and many countries are bearing the brunt. In this context, people in France have also come out on the streets.
Tension is running high in Marseille, and police and protesters are clashing. Tear gas shells are being fired from both sides. Protesters are setting fire to government property along their route and venting their anger. Police personnel are also being badly beaten.
In the La Canebiere area, some protesters attacked a municipal police station. They entered the building and it was vandalised. The incident has made the mood in the city more tense. Police are reported to have used tear gas during the protest.
There is deep anger over inflation. Rising petrol and diesel prices, climbing costs of essentials and falling incomes have upset the finances of ordinary citizens. On these issues, protesters linked to the Yellow Vests movement have stepped up the agitation once again.
The movement has also received support from students, trade unions and several social organisations. It is now being discussed across the country and beyond its borders. People have taken to the streets against Macron.
More than 80 marches and hundreds of demonstrations have been held across the country. Students are raising their voices strongly against all their problems. This has presented the government with a major challenge.
