The Centre has announced the bonus for 2025-26 for the Department of Posts ahead of Diwali, bringing relief to thousands of postal employees. The decision, coming just before the festival, has created an atmosphere of cheer.
The government has said the bonus will go only to eligible employees. These include Multi Tasking Staff (MTS), Group C employees and non-gazetted Group B employees.
Gramin Dak Sevaks (GDS), who deliver mail in rural areas, are also covered. They will be paid the amount as an ex-gratia bonus. A separate ad hoc bonus has been set aside for casual workers who are engaged on a daily-wage or temporary basis.
Under the government's rules, the bonus will equal 60 days' wages. However, the wage ceiling is Rs 7,000: monthly wages above Rs 7,000 will not be counted in the calculation.
On a wage of Rs 7,000, the maximum bonus works out to Rs 13,816. This is the upper limit, and not everyone will receive that amount. The Department of Posts issued the official letter on October 16, 2026. It says each employee's bonus will differ, depending on eligibility, average wages and the number of days worked during the year.
MTS employees will be paid according to their eligibility. Group C employees will receive a Productivity Linked Bonus (PLB) of 60 days. Non-gazetted Group B employees who meet the rules will also get the bonus. GDS employees will receive the ex-gratia bonus.
The government has given a formula: bonus = average wages x 60 / 30.4, where 30.4 is the average number of days in a month. For wages of Rs 7,000, 7,000 x 60 = 4,20,000. Divided by 30.4, this gives 13,815.78, or about Rs 13,816.
Employees with lower wages, or those who worked only six months, will receive a smaller bonus. Allowances such as DA, SB allowance and deputation allowance are added to basic pay when wages are calculated. Even if an employee's wage is Rs 40,000, it will be treated as Rs 7,000 for the bonus and no more will be counted.
