Nagpur Police have stepped up action against those illegally selling banned gutkha and scented pan masala. In the Kalmana police station area, the escort squad raided a house and seized banned tobacco products worth Rs 2,23,503. The accused had hidden the goods in the bedroom and store room of the house.
On the evening of November 5, the escort squad was on patrol when police received a confidential tip-off about a stock of banned gutkha in the New Om Sai Nagar area on Old Kamptee Road. Police then raided the house of Lakhan Chatro Chhadi (35) at plot numbers 16 and 17. The search turned up gutkha and scented pan masala of various companies.
A preliminary inquiry showed that the stock had been stored for sale, for financial gain. A case has been registered at Kalmana police station under the relevant sections on the complaint of Ravina Baban Nagle, Assistant Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration. The accused has been handed over to Kalmana police, along with the seized goods, for further action.
The action was taken under the guidance of Police Commissioner Vishwas Nangre Patil by Sub-Inspector Abhishek Bagde and the escort squad. Police are investigating where the gutkha was brought from and to whom it was to be sold.
