A fire broke out suddenly in the kitchen of an eatery in the Kohinoor Square building in Dadar, Mumbai. The eatery is Asian Kitchen. Firefighters worked flat out to douse the blaze. Fortunately, the eatery was closed, so a major tragedy was averted and no lives were lost.

The Mumbai Fire Brigade received word of the fire at 9.18 am. At 9.25 am it was declared a "Level-1" fire. It broke out on the first floor of the 50-storey Kohinoor Square building, opposite Shiv Sena Bhavan in Dadar West.

No one was killed or injured. Fire brigade personnel, Mumbai Police, BEST, the Public Works Department (PWD), health officials and ambulances reached the spot immediately and brought the situation under control.

Five to six fire engines arrived at the spot soon after the alert. As the fire broke out in the morning, the Kohinoor Mall in Dadar was not crowded, which helped in bringing it under control. Police also reached the spot, and people and staff were evacuated from the building.

A short circuit is suspected to have caused the fire. Municipal staff also assisted firefighters in controlling the fire in the Asian Kitchen kitchen and in the rescue work. The morning hour meant there was a thin crowd.

Meanwhile, questions are being raised over whether a fire safety system had been installed in the mall.
