Mira-Bhayandar civic body announces Rs 1 crore for drought-hit farmers after birthday bash criticism
The announcement came days after criticism of a lavish birthday celebration for BJP MLA Narendra Mehta, and the funds will be released only after general body approval.
Many parts of Maharashtra are in the grip of a severe drought, and farmers are facing financial hardship. Against this backdrop, a lavish celebration of BJP MLA Narendra Mehta's birthday in Mira-Bhayandar drew political and social criticism. The Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation has since announced Rs 1 crore from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund for drought-hit farmers. Because the announcement came just days after the criticism, its timing is being discussed among citizens.
Mehta's birthday was celebrated on a grand scale on Friday on the premises of the Seven Eleven school in Mira Road. A large marquee had been erected, and food was arranged for the party workers, office-bearers and guests who came to greet the MLA. There was talk in the city of heavy spending on decoration, organisation and other arrangements. Questions were raised from various quarters about the expenditure, citing the plight of drought-hit farmers.
Sushma Andhare, a leader of the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) party, had also criticised the BJP over the event. She had questioned the holding of such a grand celebration against the backdrop of the drought.
After the criticism, Mayor Dimple Mehta of the ruling BJP called a special all-party meeting on Monday to help the drought-hit. The meeting announced a decision to contribute Rs 1 crore to the Chief Minister's Relief Fund. The mayor later gave details of the aid at a press conference. The same afternoon, a training camp for BJP corporators was scheduled at Rambhau Mhalgi, and the meeting was held before it. Political circles are therefore asking whether the decision was taken only because of the criticism of the birthday event.
As the decision came to be linked with the birthday event, Mayor Dimple Mehta put forward her position. She said the corporation took the decision after Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis appealed for help for the drought-hit. The ruling BJP has therefore clarified that the decision was not taken merely in response to the criticism over the birthday.
Although the Rs 1 crore aid has been announced, the money will not be paid immediately. The final process will be completed only after the corporation's general body gives financial and administrative approval. For now, it is only an announcement, and the administrative process needed to transfer the funds must be completed. Questions are therefore being asked about when the money will actually go out. With drought-hit farmers needing urgent help, citizens are watching how quickly approval and disbursal happen.
Citizens are raising another question. Given the talk of heavy spending on the MLA's birthday event, they are asking why, if help was to be given, it was not given from the cost of that event or from the personal funds of the elected representatives concerned. The corporation's money comes from citizens' taxes. While the decision to help is being welcomed, citizens are demanding transparency on which fund the aid will come from, through what process, and when it will reach the actual beneficiaries.
The row over the grand birthday event, the political criticism of it and the subsequent announcement of Rs 1 crore in aid have heated up the city's political climate. The ruling BJP says the decision was taken after the Chief Minister's appeal, yet the timing of the decision and its political backdrop remain a talking point. What matters now is when the general body grants approval, when the funds are actually released, and how drought-hit farmers benefit.
