The market for buying and selling second-hand cars in India is changing fast. Maruti Suzuki's True Value has reached an important milestone: the company's pre-owned car business has completed 25 years in India. In this period, more than 65 lakh used cars have been sold.
Maruti Suzuki entered the used-car business through True Value in 2001. Today the network of the initiative spreads across 338 cities in the country, and customers are served through 662 outlets in all. Certified cars, warranty and vehicle valuation facilities are available there.
At that time, buying a second-hand car often involved uncertainty about the condition of the vehicle, its papers and its maintenance history. To reduce this, the company made available facilities such as car valuation, inspection, certification and warranty support.
An owner who wants to sell an old car can have the vehicle valued through True Value. With the help of technology, the condition of the car is checked and a fair price is fixed. This gives the owner an option to deal in a more orderly manner, instead of haggling hard over the price with independent buyers or sellers.
For customers buying a used car, it is important to check the vehicle's papers and service records. True Value's certification process examines these. This helps in understanding the car's ownership details and the available maintenance history. Warranty support is also provided under the policies applicable to eligible vehicles. At the company's outlets, the process of viewing and buying certified cars is carried out in an orderly way. It can therefore be comparatively easier for customers to understand the condition of the vehicle and the available documents.
Digital services have also been included in True Value's transactions. Through Maruti Suzuki Smart Finance, loan options from public sector banks, private banks and non-banking financial companies can be checked digitally. This can make the process of obtaining finance for a used car more convenient.
The growth in True Value's sales and its network expanding across the country show the importance of the organised second-hand car market. The company has noted that young customers and first-time car buyers are also turning to this business in growing numbers. As a result, buying and selling of certified used cars is likely to get a further boost in future.
According to the company, True Value has sold more than 65 lakh pre-owned cars in India since 2001. Facilities for valuation, inspection and buying and selling of used cars are available at 662 outlets in 338 cities.
