The Marathi film Dharau, built on reverence for the cow and the emotional bond between people and cattle, will release in Maharashtra theatres on October 23, 2026.
The upcoming Marathi film Dharau, based on reverence for the cow and the emotional bond between humans and the cow, will soon reach audiences. The film's motion poster was released on social media recently. The tagline with the poster reads, "Dharau... she is not a cow... she is a mother!"
Discussion about the film has begun as soon as the poster appeared. The film will release in theatres across Maharashtra on October 23, 2026.
Presented by Buldhana Urban Media House and Hindchitra Films, Dharau attempts to portray, with sensitivity, reverence for the cow and the emotional relationship tied to it. In Indian culture, the cow is not seen merely as an animal but is regarded as equal to a mother. With this sentiment at its centre, the film tries to present the cultural, historical and social importance of the cow.
Dharau is written and directed by Manish Suresh Shinde, who also wrote its screenplay. It is his first Marathi film. He has handled the story, screenplay, dialogue and direction himself.
Speaking about the film, Shinde said, "As a writer and director, Dharau is my first Marathi film, and it is very special to me. In Indian culture, the cow is not seen merely as a creature but is regarded as equal to a mother. With this sentiment at the centre, Dharau tries to understand the importance of the cow, compassion towards her and her place in society."
He added that the film's main aim is to create awareness and enlightenment in society through this subject, and to carry the historical, cultural and social references linked to the cow to the new generation.
The film has won a total of 15 awards at various film festivals. This success has raised anticipation about the film. The director has expressed confidence that the film will not be limited to a single theme but will be an experience that connects with audiences emotionally and makes them think.
The producers of the film, from Buldhana Urban Media House and Hindchitra Films, are Radheshyamji Chandak (Bhaiji), Dr Sukeshji Jhanwar and Komalji Jhanwar. The recently released motion poster has further heightened curiosity about Dharau. The Marathi film will release in theatres in Maharashtra on October 23, 2026.
