In astrology, gold is regarded as an important metal. It is believed to be linked to the Sun, and wearing it is said to increase the influence of solar energy. The same tradition lays down certain rules for wearing gold. Before wearing it, one should examine the position of the planets in one's horoscope and their likely results. For this reason, caution is advised when wearing gold during the periods of certain planets.

Shani's Sade Sati is considered an important planetary phase in astrology. It is said that a person may face several challenges in life during this period. People therefore often ask whether they should wear gold during Sade Sati, and whether doing so angers Lord Shani and brings ill effects. Here is what astrology says.

According to astrology, wearing gold ornaments during Shani's Sade Sati is considered inauspicious. The reason given is that gold is associated with the Sun, while Shani is regarded as the Sun's son. Mythological accounts mention differences and conflict between the Sun and Shani. For this reason, people are advised to avoid gold ornaments during Sade Sati or Shani's Dhaiya.

On the effects of wearing gold, astrology holds that there is enmity between Suryadev and Shani. Wearing gold ornaments during Sade Sati or Dhaiya may therefore anger Shani and lead to negative results. It is also said that wearing gold during Sade Sati increases the influence of solar energy in the body, which can heighten anger and spoil work in progress.

What, then, should be worn during Sade Sati? According to astrology, wearing an iron ring is advised to reduce the effect of Shani's Sade Sati. One belief holds that an iron ring worn on the middle finger or little finger of the right hand is auspicious. Iron rings made from a horseshoe or from boat nails may also be worn during Sade Sati.

Among gemstones, the main one linked to Shani is the blue sapphire (neelam). Some astrologers therefore recommend wearing it during Sade Sati. The blue sapphire is regarded as a potent stone, so it is advisable to have the position of Shani in one's horoscope examined before wearing it.

Rules for wearing the blue sapphire are also laid down. It is recommended that it be worn on a Saturday in the Shukla Paksha (the waxing phase of the moon). It is usually worn on the middle finger of the right hand. It is also advised that the stone be set in silver, panchdhatu (five-metal alloy) or gold. Even so, consulting a qualified astrologer before wearing it is considered proper.
