Strawberries will now be cultivated within the walls of Pune's historic Yerawada Central Jail. The Inner Wheel Club of Panchgani has distributed 600 strawberry plants in the jail premises. The unusual initiative aims to protect the environment, support the rehabilitation of prisoners and encourage positivity among them. The club took the step to deepen the inmates' connection with nature and build their gardening skills.
The green initiative was carried out with the special permission and under the guidance of jail superintendent Shamkant Shedge. The main aim is that the jail premises should not remain only a closed-in space but also have a pleasant green patch, and that prisoners receive real training in farming and gardening.
Strawberry, Panchgani's world-famous speciality, will now grow in the soil of Yerawada Jail as well. The prisoners themselves will fully look after and raise the plants. This will help them get used to a sustainable lifestyle.
Superintendent Shedge and his entire police team cooperated in the project with a very positive attitude. The office-bearers and members of the Inner Wheel Club were overwhelmed by the warm hospitality of the officers and staff. On the occasion, confidence was expressed that when nature's touch and farming skills are added to life behind bars, prisoners' thinking changes for the better.
Club president Shweta Bodhe, secretary Sneha Holkar, and past presidents Sangeeta Patil and Seema Sammel were present at the event. Superintendent Shedge and other senior police officers also attended. The club's thoughtful and socially minded initiative is being widely praised.
Yerawada Jail is generally known for its tight security. But thanks to the Panchgani Inner Wheel Club's initiative, red strawberries will now grow in the jail premises. The prisoners' care of the plants will not be limited to gardening but will also awaken positivity in them. This green touch of nature behind the walls will give a new direction to the rehabilitation of prisoners.
