INDIA bloc to march in Nagpur on October 8 against voter roll revision and Election Commission
The opposition alliance says the march is part of its nationwide campaign against the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, and it wants the Chief Election Commissioner to resign.
The INDIA bloc in Nagpur has decided to intensify its campaign against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. It has announced a large protest march in the city on October 8.
The programme was announced at a joint press conference at the Nagpur Press Club, addressed by leaders of the parties in the alliance. Nagpur city Congress president Pratul Gudhe Patil said the demonstration would be part of the INDIA bloc's nationwide campaign running from October 2 to October 8.
As part of the campaign, opposition leaders and workers will march from Variety Square to the Nagpur Collectorate at 10 am on Thursday, October 8.
Leaders of the alliance alleged that the SIR process could lead to large-scale changes in the voter lists. They also questioned whether the manner in which the lists are being revised is proper.
The opposition parties have also raised questions about the functioning of the Election Commission. They have demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Leaders and workers of the various constituent parties of the INDIA bloc are expected to gather for the march. They will register their objections to the SIR process, the changes in the voter lists and the working of the Election Commission. The concerns they have voiced about the commission's functioning will also be raised at the march.
The announcement comes as the political confrontation between the opposition and the Election Commission over the SIR continues to grow. Opposition parties are demanding closer scrutiny of the process of revising the voter list.
