A debate has begun over the durability of Apple's expensive foldable iPhone Duo. Well-known tech YouTuber JerryRigEverything put the phone through a durability test. The screen picked up scratches, and the inner display was damaged during the bend test. The video is going viral on social media.
The test was conducted by Zack Nelson of the JerryRigEverything channel. The results of the scratch, dust and bend tests have set off discussion among customers considering buying such an expensive foldable phone. Buyers may now have questions about its durability.
The outer screen performed comparatively well. Light scratches began to show on it at level 7 of the hardness scale. The 7.6-inch inner foldable screen, which is visible when the phone is opened, fared differently.
In JerryRigEverything's test, scratches appeared on the flexible inner screen at level 2 of the hardness scale. It is therefore being said that even pressure from a fingernail or contact with other objects could scratch it. The inner screen of a foldable phone is built differently from the glass screen of an ordinary smartphone, so it needs more care in use.
Another important part of the test was the dust check. After dust entered the phone's folding mechanism, the hinge jammed and the phone could not close fully. The hinge is a crucial part of a foldable phone, since opening and closing the screen repeatedly depends on it. Apple has given the iPhone Duo an IP68 rating, but such a rating does not mean complete and permanent protection from dust or water.
The bend test drew the most attention. When pressure was applied to the phone's frame, a green line appeared on the inner screen. More lines appeared when pressure was applied again, and finally the inner display stopped working. However, these results do not mean every iPhone Duo will fail like this in everyday use. The test was carried out to probe the phone's limits.
According to the tech YouTuber's test, replacing the inner display could cost about $1,000. This is an estimate. The actual cost will depend on the country, the repair method, and warranty or AppleCare coverage.
So is the iPhone Duo worth buying? For those who want a large-screen experience, multitasking and a foldable design, it can be an attractive option. But its price, the fragility of the inner screen, the possibility of dust entering the hinge and the cost of repair must be kept in mind.
Before buying, check the phone's official warranty terms, the cost of replacing the screen and the availability of AppleCare. It would not be right to form a final opinion on the phone's entire lifespan on the basis of a single durability test.
