Mumbai dermatologist Dr Sharifa Chause explains how smoke and air pollution can affect skin during Diwali and lists five ways to protect it.

Diwali is a festival of lights, joy and time with family. Many people go out during these days and also burst firecrackers. But firecracker smoke and rising air pollution can affect the skin. Mumbai dermatologist Dr Sharifa Chause has shared detailed information on the subject.

According to dermatologists, fine particles and other harmful substances in firecracker smoke can settle on the skin. This can cause irritation or discomfort. Problems such as dryness, itching, redness and acne can worsen. People with sensitive skin or those who already get acne may feel these troubles more during these days.

Explaining the effect of pollution, it was said that it can damage the skin's outer protective layer. As a result, the skin loses moisture and can become dry, rough or red. People with sensitive skin may be troubled more, and if there is an existing skin condition, its symptoms can also worsen.

Now to the measures dermatologists have suggested. First, avoid using several new skincare products at once during Diwali. To remove dust, sweat and pollution from the face, use a mild face wash and then apply a moisturiser suited to your skin. Washing the face repeatedly or rubbing the skin hard was described as not advisable, because it can damage the skin's natural protective layer.

Second, do not forget sunscreen. Along with protection from pollution, the skin also needs protection from the sun's rays. Apply sunscreen when going out during the day, especially if you will be outside for long. It can be reapplied after some time as needed.

Third, wash the face thoroughly on returning home. After coming from a crowded or heavily smoky place, wash the face with a mild face wash, but do not rub hard or wash too often, or the skin's natural oil may reduce and the skin may dry out. Clothes exposed to smoke and pollution should also be changed after reaching home.

Fourth, apply moisturiser and drink plenty of water. Pollution and dry air can reduce the skin's moisture. Regular use of a moisturiser helps retain moisture. Drinking enough water through the day and eating a balanced diet also help keep the skin healthy.

Fifth, those who get acne should take special care of their skin. Pollution, sweat, heavy makeup and repeatedly touching the face can clog skin pores, which can worsen acne. So use products that do not clog pores, and remove makeup completely before sleeping at night.

According to dermatologists, during Diwali the skin faces smoke, dust, pollution, heat and heavy makeup, so proper care is necessary. People with sensitive skin and acne should avoid rubbing the skin hard and applying unnecessary products. A mild face wash, moisturiser and sunscreen may be enough for skin care. If redness suddenly increases, itching starts, pimples break out or acne worsens considerably, they have been advised to consult a dermatologist instead of trying various home remedies on their own.
