A degree in hand is no guarantee of success today. Whether one is looking for a job after finishing studies, starting a business or seeking quick progress at work, certain skills set a person apart. Many people have a good degree and knowledge but cannot put their point across well, do not understand money matters or struggle to keep pace with new technology. Learning a few essential skills can improve both career and personal life. These six skills can help in almost every field.

The first is communication. However good one's knowledge, many opportunities can be lost if it cannot be conveyed properly. Communication is not just speaking well. It also means listening carefully, explaining things in simple words and giving the right answer at the right time. It is needed everywhere, from job interviews to office meetings and business deals. To improve it, practise speaking for two to three minutes on any subject every day, do not interrupt others, and state your point clearly in few words. This improves relationships and reduces misunderstandings at work.

The second is financial knowledge, or an understanding of money. Earning is important, but managing money well is just as important. Many people save nothing by the end of the month despite a good income, and a major reason can be a lack of proper planning. This understanding teaches how to balance income, spending, savings and investment. Start by keeping an account of monthly income and expenses. Understand the difference between needs and wants, save for emergencies, and learn the basics of bank accounts, interest, inflation, insurance and investment. Before putting money into any investment, it is essential to understand its risks.

The third is speaking English. English is not necessary in every job or field, but in many places it proves useful. Being able to speak it can make it easier to reach new opportunities, especially in corporate offices, multinational companies (MNCs), interviews and international work. This does not mean one cannot succeed without English, since a good command of one's own language and an understanding of the subject are equally important. If you hesitate while speaking, begin with short sentences, practise speaking English for 10 to 15 minutes daily, watch easy videos, learn new words and make sentences with them. If you make a mistake, learn from it rather than panic. Confidence will grow gradually.

The fourth is self-discipline. Setting a goal is not enough for success; one must also work towards it steadily every day. Self-discipline teaches control over one's time, habits and work. For example, to learn a new skill, giving a little time every day can be more beneficial than studying for many hours in a single day. To build it, make a list of important tasks at the start of the day and try to finish the most important one first. Avoid wasting time on the mobile phone, break a big goal into small parts and review your work every day. When you complete set tasks regularly, both your capacity for work and your confidence can improve gradually.

The fifth is marketing. Marketing is not just selling a product. An important part of it is understanding what people need and how your work can meet that need. The skill is useful to salaried employees, businesspeople, freelancers and those starting their own business. If you have a fine skill but people do not know about it, getting the right opportunity can be difficult. To learn it, first understand what is special about your work or product, then find out whom it needs to reach and what kind of problem they want solved. Learn the basics of digital marketing, social media, content marketing and dealing with customers. Learn also to understand people's needs and to keep their trust. Good marketing can take your work to the right people.

The sixth is AI skills. Artificial intelligence (AI) is now used in many areas, including studies, office work, marketing, research and content creation. Learning to use AI tools properly can therefore be beneficial. They can make it easier to gather information, find new ideas, understand data and finish everyday tasks quickly. Start with simple tools. Use them to ask questions, understand a subject in simple language, draft emails or plan a task. Also learn how to give AI clear instructions and how to check its answers. Not all information from AI is necessarily correct, so verify facts from reliable sources before taking any important decision. Do not treat AI as a substitute for your own understanding and effort; use it as a tool that helps in your work.
