Cyber fraudsters target Nagpur car owner with fake insurance renewal calls
Scammers posing as insurance agents used a car owner's policy details to pressure him into an online payment in Nagpur
Cyber fraudsters in Nagpur have devised a new method to trap people under the pretext of renewing vehicle insurance policies. They call car owners claiming to be insurance company agents and pressure them to make online payments to renew their policy. What makes this especially dangerous is that the fraudsters already have the car owner's policy details, mobile number and address, which helps them easily gain the victim's trust.
In a case that has come to light in the city, a car owner had been receiving repeated calls for nearly a year in the name of insurance renewal. The caller, claiming to be an insurance agent, kept asking him to make an online payment. When the car owner refused to pay, the accused allegedly turned abusive and began hurling insults.
According to the case, the car owner had insured his vehicle with IndusInd General Insurance Company Limited. Following this, a person claiming to be an agent named Sunil Yadav began repeatedly contacting him from the number 9315420074. Troubled by this, the car owner blocked the number. However, a call then came from another number, 7065303011, and an attempt was again made to pressure him into making an online payment.
These cyber fraudsters are attempting to gain people's trust by using the names of insurance companies and online services such as Policybazaar. It is reported that similar calls are also being received from different mobile numbers in Delhi and Rajasthan.
Cyber experts say there is always a risk of misuse of personal information shared while availing online insurance services. Once a car owner's mobile number, address and policy details reach fraudsters, they can be used to make fake calls and commit fraud.
Experts have advised people not to immediately trust anyone who calls for insurance renewal. Payment should be made only after confirming the number through the company's official website or authorised office. People should also avoid clicking on unknown links, sharing OTPs or downloading suspicious apps.
Cyber expert Amit Bhure has appealed to citizens to remain cautious. According to him, any suspicious call received in the name of insurance renewal should first be verified. If possible, policy renewal should be done only through an authorised insurance agent or the company's official channels. If any cyber fraud occurs, a complaint should be immediately filed on the 1930 helpline number.
