Drought-like conditions have developed in Karad taluka because of the lack of rain. To see the situation first hand, Baburao Pawar, Karad North taluka president of the Nationalist Congress, walked to the edges of farmers' fields and visited village after village to take stock.

He visited Chorjawadi, Marli, Dhawarwadi, Maskarwadi, Sakharwadi, Bhagatwadi and Chore villages in the Pal Zilla Parishad area, where he spoke directly to farmers and villagers. Farmers' difficulties were assessed by finding out the condition of crops, how much water is available and the state of water sources.

Rainfall has been low this year in many parts of Karad taluka, making the question of water for farming serious. In view of this, Pawar toured the fields village by village. He also saw for himself the condition of dams, percolation tanks and other water sources. Farmers were asked about the water stocks available and the irrigation situation.

Farmers discussed the rain situation, the effect on crops, the water available for irrigation and the water problem in the coming season. Given the shortage of water and the condition of crops, many farmers voiced concern about the next season.

Baburao Pawar said the seriousness of farmers' problems cannot be understood without going to the edges of their fields and seeing the situation directly.

Pawar said the findings of the village-wise survey would be brought to the government's notice. He demanded that Karad taluka be declared drought-affected and that farmers be given necessary assistance and relief.

Present on the occasion were Congress organisation chief Rambhau Ghadge, vice-president Suresh Patil, treasurer Rajendra Salunkhe, Chandrakant Salunkhe, SC cell president Vikram Sawant, and farmers and villagers from the villages concerned.

Pawar said he had gone to farmers' fields and seen the conditions himself. According to him, the lack of rain has created serious difficulties for farming in many areas. He said the government should take the situation seriously and give farmers of Karad taluka the necessary assistance and relief.
