A bus driver was badly beaten with an iron rod by the driver of a private passenger vehicle after a minor argument over giving way outside the Mahagaon bus stand in Yavatmal district. A video of the assault is going viral on social media, and there is considerable anger in the area.
According to the information available, a Manav Vikas bus (registration MH 40 Y 5410 / MH 40 Y 5406), which carries schoolgirls on the Mahagaon-Senad route, had arrived outside the Mahagaon bus stand. A private passenger vehicle bearing registration MH 28 AN 3029 was also there, and a quarrel broke out with its driver over giving way. Bus driver Dnyaneshwar Wankhede asked him to move his vehicle aside. The private vehicle's driver flew into a rage and the argument escalated.
In his anger, the driver took out an iron rod and beat Wankhede badly. He then fled the spot.
The schoolgirls in the bus were badly frightened by the sudden attack. As the driver was injured, about 20 girls travelling on the Mahagaon-Senad route had to wait a full hour to get home.
On learning of the incident, Mahagaon police station in-charge Sevanand Wankhade reached the spot immediately. He consoled the injured driver and reassured him. Wankhede then took charge of the bus again despite being unwell and dropped all the girls safely at their homes. The injured driver is said to be in stable condition for now.
A case has been registered at Mahagaon police station on the bus driver's complaint. Police are investigating further.
The matter began over a request to give way, but escalated to the point where a bus driver was beaten with a rod and about 20 schoolgirls were held up for an hour. After the video went viral, public anger in the area is evident.
