Motorists who break traffic rules in Akola will now be watched by advanced technology. The Akola Regional Transport Office (RTO) has received a Mobile Enforcement Tracking System (MTES) equipped with artificial intelligence (AI), radar and special cameras. The system moves around the roads keeping a watch on violations, and it is now with the Akola RTO.
Figures on action taken so far have also emerged. In the six months from April to September, action was taken against 2,938 vehicles in the district, and fines of Rs 1.06 crore (Rs 1,06,18,000) were recovered.
The system has an AI camera mounted on the roof of the vehicle that keeps watch through 360 degrees. Alongside it are a speed radar, automatic number plate recognition (ANPR), a breath analyser and a tint meter. The vehicle also has a special roof camera, which, it has been stated, can rotate through an angle of 180 degrees and capture the movement of vehicles on the road.
Because infrared lights are provided along with the radar technology, vehicles can be filmed even in the dark of night, the RTO has said. It is expected that detecting violations will become much faster as a result.
When a rule is broken, photographs and a video of about 10 seconds, with a record of the date, time and place, are sent to the control room. The documents of the offending driver are then checked and an e-challan is sent with the photographs.
The violations to be watched have also been specified. Action will be taken for overspeeding, riding without a helmet, not wearing a seat belt, three persons on a two-wheeler, driving in the wrong direction, lane cutting and use of incorrect number plates.
At present the vehicles are deployed on the Akola-Nagpur bypass, the Murtizapur road and accident-prone spots in the city. In the next phase, mobile enforcement is planned to begin in stages in the talukas of Akot, Balapur, Patur, Telhara and Barshitakli. The system will be introduced in all talukas of the district in stages. A separate control room for the whole district is also proposed at Akola.
The information was given in the name of Regional Transport Officer Ravindra Bhuyar.
