A major tragedy occurred in Kolkata during Durga Puja. On the evening of Saptami, part of the Chorbagan community puja pandal collapsed under the pressure of a huge crowd. The incident caused chaos in the area, and people began running in panic, leading to a stampede. Seventeen people died in the stampede and at least 25 devotees were injured.

According to preliminary information, a huge crowd had gathered for darshan on Saptami at the well-known Chorbagan puja pandal in north Kolkata. With heavy rain falling outside, people crowded into the pandal. Part of the pandal collapsed because of the sudden surge in the crowd and a weakened structure.

The sudden collapse spread fear among those inside the pandal and set off the stampede. About 35 people injured in the accident were quickly brought out to safety and admitted to Calcutta Medical College Hospital for treatment. The condition of some of them is reported to be critical.

Police, emergency management officials and the fire brigade reached the spot soon after being informed. The administration has begun relief work and is focusing on getting the injured to hospital. In the wake of the tragedy, the West Bengal government has issued a helpline number, 18003455678.

Given the seriousness of the situation, the administration immediately switched off the power supply and lighting at the pandal. Roads outside the pandal were also regulated for some time. The puja organisers have been summoned to the police station, and darshan of the idol has been suspended for now.

Leaders expressed deep grief over the tragedy and prayed for the quick recovery of the injured. The administration has made all arrangements for medical treatment at the hospital, and political leaders and workers have also come forward to help. The administration has appealed to people to stay away from rumours and to take care in crowded places.
