The Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation has started a separate toll-free number for complaints about firecracker pollution and rule violations during Diwali.
The Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation has taken a key step to curb air and noise pollution caused by firecrackers during Diwali. The corporation has started a separate toll-free helpline for complaints about firecracker pollution and those flouting the rules. Citizens can register complaints on 1800 233 1101.
Concern is being raised about worsening air quality in Ulhasnagar during Diwali. Falling temperatures and rising levels of pollutants are affecting air quality. The corporation's environment department has therefore begun preventive measures to keep pollution in check.
The corporation has issued guidelines for firecracker makers, sellers and citizens. Under a government notification, making, selling and bursting firecrackers louder than 125 decibels is prohibited.
As per Supreme Court directions, firecrackers containing hazardous chemicals such as barium salts, lithium, arsenic, lead and mercury are also banned. These chemicals release toxic pollutants into the air, which can affect human health, animals and plants.
The corporation has warned of action against traders who stock or sell banned firecrackers. Even permitted firecrackers can be sold only at authorised places and with the required permissions.
Under the Maharashtra government's Majhi Vasundhara initiative and the Swachh Survekshan 2026 campaign, the corporation has appealed to residents to celebrate an eco-friendly Diwali. They have been asked to burst as few firecrackers as possible, use cloth or paper bags instead of plastic bags, and prefer biodegradable and reusable items.
If firecracker rules are seen being broken, or pollution causes people discomfort, complaints can be made on the same number. The corporation has also appealed to citizens to support the administration in keeping pollution in check.
