A major plot to carry out a mass shooting at a Hindu temple in the US state of Illinois has been foiled. The conspiracy came to nothing because of the alertness of American security agencies. The case concerns a Hindu temple in the Palatine area of Illinois.
After news of the incident emerged, Isha Foundation founder Sadhguru posted on the social media platform X. He voiced concern and raised questions about growing hateful thinking and the upbringing of the new generation. Sadhguru wrote that when a young person's life becomes so poisoned by hatred that he plots to kill innocent people he sees as different from himself, it shows clearly that, as a society, we have failed to raise the next generation properly.
In his post in English, dated October 16, 2026, Sadhguru also wrote that it is most important to foster a spirit of inclusiveness and to work towards raising human consciousness. He offered deep thanks to those who acted immediately to stop the Aurora attack.
According to information given by the police, the case came to light on October 11. The Mount Prospect Police Department received important information from a vigilant citizen. A complaint was filed saying that highly objectionable and disturbing electronic messages had been received from a 19-year-old named Alexandros Paporakis. Police said Paporakis had shared a complete document and plan for a mass shooting at a Hindu temple.
Besides the written plan, the young man had also sent photographs of a high-powered rifle, loaded magazines, body armour and other tactical equipment. On receiving the information, Palatine police acted immediately with the help of Mount Prospect police. Paporakis was surrounded and taken into custody as he was preparing to leave his home.
After he was detained, Palatine police detectives served a search warrant at his house. Police found a startling cache. A high-powered rifle, hundreds of live cartridges, several loaded magazines, a tactical vest and body armour were seized.
Most serious of all, police found items and patches linked to white supremacist extremist ideology during the search. The material carried statements spreading hatred and promoting violence, particularly against people of South Asian and Indian origin. The investigation has found that the accused's thinking was extremely dangerous and driven by religious hatred.
According to American intelligence agencies, Paporakis was preparing to attack a Hindu temple in the Aurora area on October 11 itself. Police have charged him with making a terrorist threat (a Class X felony) and unlawful possession of a deadly weapon. Given the gravity of the case, the judge denied him bail and ordered that he be kept in custody.
Palatine Police Chief William Nord said the gravity of the incident was very great. According to him, police acted very swiftly with the cooperation of the FBI and other local agencies, which averted a major bloodbath. He said in particular that the security of places of worship is their priority.
