The BMC has advised residents to boil and filter drinking water for the next seven days as Yevai's Master Balancing Reservoir Cell 2 is commissioned after repairs.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has appealed to residents of Mumbai, Thane and Bhiwandi to drink only boiled and filtered water for the next seven days. The advisory is particularly meant for those who drink water straight from the tap.

The reason is that Cell 2 of the Master Balancing Reservoir at Yevai, in the Pise-Panjrapur complex that supplies water to the BMC, has had its repair work completed. The cell is being formally commissioned on Wednesday, October 28, 2026.

The process, however, is feared to affect the quality of water distributed in Mumbai city, the eastern suburbs and the Thane and Bhiwandi municipal corporation areas. The BMC has issued the notice in view of public health. The administration has said no risk should be taken with water use, and that for seven days running, drinking water should not be used unboiled and unfiltered.

According to the BMC, as a precaution, water must be boiled and filtered for drinking throughout the week. The administration has asked residents to cooperate with it by following these instructions.

The wards of Mumbai city that fall in the affected areas are as follows. A ward includes the Naval Dockyard and the BPT premises. The entire areas of B ward, E ward, F South ward and F North ward are also included.

In the eastern suburbs, T ward covers Mulund (East) and Mulund West. S ward includes Bhandup, Nahur, Kanjurmarg and Vikhroli (East). N ward covers Vikhroli, Ghatkopar (East) and Ghatkopar. L ward includes Kurla (East). The entire areas of M East ward and M West ward are also on the list.

Residents of the areas where the BMC supplies water in the Thane and Bhiwandi municipal corporation limits should also take full precautions. Given the possible effect on water quality, drinking water must be boiled and filtered.
