Police in Nagpur have arrested the personal assistant (PA) of a Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) on charges of driving a speeding car under the influence of alcohol on Dussehra night. Police said his car hit two vehicles in quick succession. Rahil Shakil Sheikh, a 28-year-old delivery worker, was seriously injured in the crash.
Rahil has suffered deep head injuries. He is being treated at a private hospital and his condition is said to be critical.
According to police, the accused is Ketan Hivanj. He had gone to a party and was driving back in his car to his home in Godhani. Near Samvidhan Chowk, his car hit Rahil's two-wheeler. The impact was so strong that Rahil was thrown up and landed beside a tree at the roadside. He was headed towards Yashodhara Nagar at the time.
The accused is alleged to have driven off instead of helping the injured man. Further ahead, while heading towards the flyover near Kasturchand Park, his car rammed into a pickup van. The car stopped after this second collision and police caught the accused.
Sitabuldi police reached the spot on receiving news of the incident and took the accused into custody. Police said he was unable to stand properly because of intoxication. He was taken to a government hospital, where a medical examination confirmed alcohol in his blood.
Police have registered a case under the relevant sections, including rash and dangerous driving, causing hurt in an accident and drunk driving. The accused was produced in court on Wednesday and sent to judicial custody.
Rahil is said to be the sole earning member of his family. Movement of people in the city was heavy during Dussehra and Dhammachakra Pravartan Din. On such an occasion, speeding and allegedly drunk driving could have proved even more dangerous.
