A 32-year-old man, Kisan Gadhire, was killed during a violent confrontation with his in-laws in Mangalvedha taluka of Solapur district on Tuesday night. Police have registered a murder case and detained his father-in-law, Atul Kasbe.
According to police, Gadhire had brought the younger sister of his first wife to his home so that she could pursue higher studies. Over time he grew close to her and married her. The second marriage is described as unlawful. His first wife, Kasbe and the young woman's brother are said to have been strongly opposed to it, and tension between Gadhire and the Kasbe family kept building.
On Tuesday night the disagreement turned into a fierce quarrel. Preliminary accounts say Gadhire picked up a sword and went for Kasbe and his brother-in-law, intending to kill them. He then chased the brother-in-law to attack him.
Kasbe, who saw the assault on his son and on himself, is said to have lost his temper. He stepped in and struck Gadhire on the head with a large stone. He then hit him repeatedly with the same sword. Gadhire collapsed in a pool of blood and died on the spot.
Mangalvedha police reached the spot soon after being informed. A murder case has been registered at Mangalvedha police station, and the accused father-in-law is in custody while the investigation continues.
The killing has caused a stir across the taluka. Residents are frightened, and many are discussing how a quarrel within a family reached such an extreme.
Police are examining the background to the incident, the exact cause of the dispute, the weapons used and the part played by each person present. Not every detail has been confirmed so far, and officials say the full sequence of events will be clear only once the official investigation is complete.
