A 60-year-old man died of electrocution in Ganjbasoda in Madhya Pradesh's Vidisha district. The deceased has been identified as Ramdhin Gupta. Construction work was under way in the house where he lived, and he was struck by current from an 11 kV overhead power line.
According to the information available, the house is in Ward No. 6 and Gupta lived in it as a tenant. Work was going on in the house, and he went to the balcony to spit out gutkha while it was under way. There he was hit by current from the 11,000-volt high-tension line. His body was later found hanging on the balcony.
Ganjbasoda city police reached the spot as soon as they were informed. Police have registered a case and begun an investigation into the whole matter. They have taken Gupta's body into their custody. The investigation is continuing.
Local residents say the 11 kV power line passing very close to the house poses a risk of accidents. Residents had asked the electricity department to shift the line elsewhere and to put full safety measures in place.
The deceased's relatives say that when the house was built, they had been told the line should be moved away from it. They say they informed the people at the electric house about this, but nothing was done, and instead they were charged Rs 5,000.
Gupta was working inside the house he lived in. During the work he came out to spit in the gallery, and it was then that he died of the electric shock. Police are now investigating the matter further.
