Rainfall has been lower this year, and the effect has been felt directly in the water held in dams. For this reason, the Jalgaon Municipal Corporation has decided to impose a 10 per cent water cut in the city. The decision has been taken in view of the condition of water in the Waghur dam and in line with directions from the state government.
The cut takes effect from Saturday. In some parts of the city, the daily water supply has been reduced by 15 minutes. Residents of Jalgaon will now get water for 1 hour 15 minutes instead of 1 hour 30 minutes.
The water cut will not be limited to Jalgaon. Water supply will also be cut in Mumbai, Pune, Sangli, Thane and Kolhapur. The step is being taken in view of drought conditions, and the cuts are to begin from today.
The water stock in the state's dams has also been discussed. It has been said that, because of low rainfall, the state's dams hold 10 per cent of their water stock. It has also been stated that, because of the drought, the state has only 27 per cent water, and so a 10 per cent cut has been imposed. It is also being said that water will be reserved until August 2027, and that the cut is being made because 72 per cent of the stock remains.
In view of the scarcity, those who waste water will face direct action in the form of fines. The municipal corporation will form a special team for this. Taps that have no spouts will be surveyed, and directions will be issued to fit spouts there.
Action will also be taken against those who use drinking water for non-essential purposes such as washing vehicles and sprinkling roads. There is also a warning that if wastage keeps increasing in this way, residents of the city may face a water shortage as early as the winter season. This possibility cannot be ruled out.
