Vadgaon Maval: A government committee will visit Maval taluka within the next two days to see drought-like conditions on the ground, following sustained follow-up with the government by MLA Sunil Shelke over the plight of the taluka's paddy farmers.

The decision was taken at a ministry-level meeting in Mumbai, chaired by Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, who heads the drought relief committee. Given the demand to declare Maval drought-hit, the move is being seen as an important step by the government. Farmers in the taluka are now watching for the report the committee will submit after its inspection.

Maval is counted among the state's major paddy-growing areas. It gets good rain, the weather suits the crop and the land is fertile, which is why paddy is cultivated on a large scale. Indrayani rice from here is in demand not just in Maharashtra but across the country. Thousands of farmers in the taluka depend on paddy for their income, and paddy is transplanted over more than 12,000 hectares every year. Damage to the crop therefore means more than a farming loss and could seriously affect the rural economy.

This time the rain stayed away, and paddy cultivation in Maval has been hit hard. The rain fell short of what was expected in the season, and in many areas the crop did not get the water it needed. There is now a fear of the crop withering, stunted plant growth and lower yields. In some places the paddy has dried up entirely, causing heavy losses to farmers. The taluka's dams hold water, but there is a question over getting it to the fields at the right time and in full quantity. Paddy needs rain at key stages of growth, and the rain was missing at exactly those stages, leaving farmers in financial distress.

With Maval known as a stronghold of paddy, farmers are worried that this very crop is in trouble. The costs of transplanting, fertiliser, seed, labour and other farming expenses have added to their financial burden. If the yield falls short of expectations, farmers also face the question of how to repay loans and prepare for the next season. This has strengthened the demand that the actual condition of the crop in the taluka be assessed, the loss properly estimated, and a quick decision taken on declaring Maval drought-hit.

Against this background, MLA Sunil Shelke visited different parts of Maval taluka a few days ago and saw paddy fields affected by the shortfall in rain. He spoke to farmers, understood their difficulties and placed the taluka's serious situation before the government. He kept pressing the government on the losses of paddy farmers, the lack of rain and the availability of water for farming. His effort has been to ensure farmers get help in time and that the government decides quickly, given the seriousness of the situation.

Following this, the ministry meeting decided to send a government committee to assess the drought-like conditions in Maval taluka. Within the next two days the committee will visit the taluka and examine the condition of crops in different areas, the rainfall, the availability of water for farming and the losses incurred. It will then submit a report to the government. This report could open the way for a further decision on the drought situation.

If Maval is declared drought-hit, affected farmers are likely to receive assistance and concessions under the prevailing government norms. It will therefore be important that the committee's inspection records the actual losses correctly, assesses the affected area accurately and that the report reaches the government quickly. The government's step towards meeting the demand has raised hopes among farmers, but the final decision and the nature of the assistance will depend on the government's further orders. The whole taluka is now watching how seriously the committee's report reflects the paddy losses in Maval and what concrete decisions the government takes to give farmers relief.
