Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will stay at a farmer family's home in Nagpur district's Narkhed taluka and celebrate Diwali with them, as drought hits farmers.
Nagpur: Even as Diwali brings lights to homes and a festive mood, the festival has come under the shadow of worry in the homes of many farmers because of drought. Nature has taken away the crop that was within their grasp, and farmers are caught in financial distress.
In this situation, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has taken an unusual decision. On the eve of Diwali he will reach Loharisavanga village in Narkhed taluka of Nagpur district. He will stay the night at the home of a farmer family there and celebrate Diwali the next day with the same family. Preparations to welcome the Chief Minister have begun in the village. It has been said that this is the first time in the state's history that a Chief Minister will stay at a farmer's home and celebrate Diwali with the family, and this is what sets the initiative apart.
Lack of rain this year has caused heavy damage to farming. Many farmers lost the crop that was within their reach. Many families now face the question of how to celebrate Diwali in such circumstances. The government has given advance assistance of Rs 5,000, but the farmers' difficulties have not ended. At such a time, the Chief Minister's decision to visit a farmer's home and celebrate the festival is being discussed.
Fadnavis had earlier appealed that every minister should go to a village for at least one day and celebrate Diwali with farmers. He had said ministers should talk to farmer families and learn about their problems. The Chief Minister has now begun this appeal with his own action.
Away from the glitter of cities, a Diwali lamp will be lit this time in the presence of the Chief Minister at the home of a farmer family living under the shadow of drought. To understand the food on the farmer's plate, the conditions at home and the pain in his heart, the Chief Minister will stay at his house. It remains to be seen whether the meeting gives farmers only emotional support or also leads to firm decisions on their questions.
