The Election Commission has announced the special summary revision of voter lists in six more states and Union Territories, with 1 January 2027 as the qualifying date.

The Election Commission of India has announced the special summary revision (SSR) of electoral rolls in six more states and Union Territories. The exercise will use 1 January 2027 as the qualifying date.

According to the Commission, the SSR will be held in Arunachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, Mizoram, Odisha and Sikkim. New voters' names will be added to the rolls during the exercise.

Under the schedule, the rationalisation of polling stations is to be completed by 20 November 2026. The integrated draft electoral roll will be published on 30 November 2026. Claims and objections can be filed from 30 November to 30 December 2026. The final electoral roll will be published on 21 January 2027.

Young people turning 18 on or before 1 January 2027 will have their names included in the rolls. Those who will turn 18 on 1 April, 1 July and 1 October 2027 can also apply in advance to have their names added. The Commission has said it will accept advance applications from those turning 18 in 2027.

On 15 October, the Commission had announced the SSR in 17 states and Union Territories, including Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Goa and Uttarakhand. With the latest announcement, the SSR has now been declared for a total of 23 states and Union Territories.

The Commission said the SSR schedule will be announced later for states and Union Territories where the special intensive revision (SIR) is under way or has been completed. These include Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Delhi, Tripura and Telangana. In Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, the SSR dates will be fixed later, depending on weather conditions.

The Commission has issued several key instructions to officials so that the exercise is transparent and completed on time. Under Section 13CC of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, every official engaged in preparing the electoral rolls will be deemed to be on deputation to the Election Commission. Chief secretaries will ensure that no posts of CEO, DEO, ERO or block development officer are vacant. No official will be transferred during the SSR without the Commission's approval. The ERO will be responsible for ensuring that no eligible citizen is left out and no ineligible person enters the list.

In a letter to the chief electoral officers of the six states and Union Territories, the Commission said that on 29 September it had directed that a special campaign be run to register eligible voters whose names have not been enrolled, including young people and first-time voters.
