Delhi Police have arrested CJP founder Abhijeet Deepke after detaining him. CJP legal head Ratna Singh reacted in a post on X.
Singh wrote that the SEM court should release Deepke because his arrest was illegal. According to her, Deepke had only appealed to people to hoist the tricolour. She asked how there could be any crime in that.
She further wrote that the manner in which Deepke was picked up from outside his home, the lack of any information about his whereabouts and the denial of access to him for his lawyers raised serious questions about legal process and basic rights.
Delhi Police have acted against Deepke under Sections 126 and 170 of the BNSS. These provisions are used to maintain peace and to prevent cognisable offences. He is to be produced before the SEM court. The agitation called by CJP demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and of SIR. The organisation questioned the police action.
Earlier, CJP members Saurabh Das and Ashutosh Ranka had been arrested. After that, Deepke announced an agitation with the slogan "Tiranga Fahrao" at Central Park in Connaught Place, Delhi. On Friday, however, police detained him before the agitation. Delhi Police detained him as a precaution. He was picked up while heading towards Central Park. Neha Bora was also detained at Mandi House.
On Friday, Delhi Police went to Deepke's home and gave him two notices. One notice, issued under the Delhi Police Act on behalf of New Delhi, directed him not to go to Central Park, where Section 163 of the CrPC is in force. South-West Delhi Police issued the second notice. It said that Abhijeet, Ashutosh and Saurabh had been detained as a precaution from the airport and produced in court, that they have been bound over, and that the court had ordered them not to cause any disturbance for a year.
Delhi Police were fully prepared on Friday. Connaught Place, Central Park and the whole of central Delhi were fortified. More than 6,000 Delhi Police personnel were deployed across the area. Some 220 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) were on standby. More than 10 new CCTV cameras were installed in the Central Park and Rajiv Chowk areas. Police and paramilitary forces were posted in key parts of Delhi, including Connaught Place, Rajiv Chowk, Central Park, Jantar Mantar and Palika Bazaar. Seven layers of security were put in place at Central Park, and additional police were called in from other districts.
