The Union Cabinet cleared the expansion and strengthening of 850 fast track courts to speed up rape and child sexual abuse cases, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said.
The Centre has taken a key decision to speed up justice in cases of sexual offences against women and children. The Union Cabinet met on Wednesday under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. At the meeting, it approved the expansion and strengthening of 850 fast track courts across the country.
Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the decision after the meeting.
The main aim of the decision is the quick disposal of cases of rape and sexual abuse of children. These special courts also hear cases under the POCSO Act. The government expects that expanding the special courts will help clear pending cases faster and help victims get justice in time.
According to Law and Justice Ministry data, 775 fast track special courts were functioning in 29 states and Union Territories as of April 30, 2026. The expansion and strengthening of these courts has now been approved, which is seen as a step towards increasing the capacity of the justice system.
It is expected that the new courts will help dispose of pending cases of rape and child sexual abuse sooner. The courts will hear cases of rape, atrocities against women and sexual abuse of children. The decision is being seen as particularly important for the safety of women and children.
The government says that if the special courts are strengthened, verdicts in such cases can come on time and victims will get relief.
