Maharashtra Highway Police have issued new traffic rules for the "Missing Link" on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. Under the rules, all types of heavy goods vehicles will be permanently barred from the stretch from November 1.
The arrangement ran on a trial basis for six months, and the restriction is now being made permanent after that period. The ban applies not only to large trucks but to all goods vehicles, including pickup vans and small commercial vehicles.
The decision has been taken keeping in mind the safety of the tunnel and technical reasons. Preventing traffic jams and accidents has also been cited as a purpose.
The Missing Link is a 13.3-km route connecting Khopoli and Kusgaon. It was opened to traffic on May 1, 2026, so that the journey between Mumbai and Pune could be completed in less time without passing through the Khandala ghat.
Private cars, jeeps and other permitted light motor vehicles will be allowed on the route, with a maximum speed of 100 km per hour.
The speed limit for passenger buses and other permitted passenger vehicles will be 80 km per hour.
Vehicles carrying inflammable, explosive or other hazardous substances will also be barred from using the Missing Link.
Goods vehicles and other restricted vehicles will have to continue using the old, original route of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. The new rules will come into force on November 1 and remain in effect until further orders.
