A month after its launch, the portal shows no volunteering opportunity in any of seven categories, though officials say listings will come by the end of the month.

A month has passed since the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) started its 'Participate Mumbai' portal, but not a single opportunity to join as a volunteer is visible on it yet. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis formally launched it on October 6, 2026. The platform aims to connect citizens, corporate companies and organisations so that Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) resources and volunteer effort can be put into Mumbai's sustainable development.

The portal has seven volunteer categories: health, community service, education, environment, disaster relief, gardens and parks, and solid waste management. All are listed under "Volunteer Initiatives Coming Soon", and no category currently has an opportunity posted. Officials said opportunities should appear by the end of the month in the citizen participation section, where about 500 volunteers are registered.

The portal's volunteer page reads, "Join thousands of citizens who are making a real difference, from beach clean-ups and tree planting to health camps and education programmes." On the mission of 'Participate Mumbai', it says the aim is to create a structured, transparent and effective way of directing CSR resources towards Mumbai's most pressing development challenges.

The picture is different on the CSR side. At present 246 projects are live and CSR proposals worth about Rs 40 crore have been received. Solid waste management projects have drawn the most response, followed by education. A civic official said, "We will urge organisations to take part in our health-related projects as well."

Asked what the "about 500" registered volunteers cited by the BMC at launch are doing now that there are no opportunities, an official said, "The volunteers are registered with us. As soon as we launch opportunities, we will offer participation to people from this same pool." Asked whether the number of registered volunteers had risen in the past month, the official said, "No, our focus is first on starting programmes. After that we will focus on adding more volunteers by reaching out to students and senior citizens."

Asked how many volunteering ideas had come in from citizens so far, the official said, "We have received fifteen ideas so far and the process of considering them is under way. Citizens can submit their ideas through the portal and the BMC will process their listing. Many opportunities will be listed by the end of this month."

Tejinderpal Singh, 59, associated with a gurdwara in Malad, is a food distribution volunteer. He said, "We regularly do langar seva at our gurdwara and at different places. But often there is no one to receive the food, and cooked food does not keep for long. If 'Participate Mumbai' offers real-time opportunities for distributing food, it will be useful to us. Technology will make our service easier and also reduce food waste."

Grace Harjas, 22, is a psychology student and a mental health counselling volunteer. She said, "I have done education and career counselling for students, family and relationship counselling at health camps, and also worked in psychoeducation awareness campaigns. Such opportunities are hard to come by on one's own, and mostly we have to pay organisers for the experience. Many psychology students across Mumbai can help those in need, and themselves too, through this portal."

Volunteer Dharmesh Barai said, "We are an established volunteering group and have been holding clean-up drives every weekend for the past five years. About 1.5 lakh volunteers have taken part in 324 events in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and 1,300 tonnes of waste has been removed from the seashore. Even so, we do not know about this portal. If the BMC needs volunteering opportunities to put on the portal, why not contact experienced groups like us?"
