Somaiya cites Mumbai birth data, asks Fadnavis to set up demography committee

BJP leader Kirit Somaiya has raised the issue of birth rates among Hindu and Muslim children in Mumbai. He has expressed concern over the changes in the city's population and demanded that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis set up a special committee to study them.

Somaiya made a post on the social media platform X. According to him, the ratio of Hindu to Muslim births in Mumbai is 3:2, that is, three Hindu children for every two Muslim children. He also put out some figures in the post, and on that basis claimed that the population of some areas of Mumbai has changed.

According to the figures in Somaiya's post, 70,380 Hindu children and 48,554 Muslim children were born in Mumbai in 2025. He also gave figures for the past five years, saying 3,36,625 Hindu and 2,20,754 Muslim children were born in that period.

In his post, Somaiya wrote of a conspiracy for a "Muslim Mumbai". He expressed apprehension that Mumbai would become a Muslim Mumbai. In his words, he has requested Chief Minister Fadnavis to form a demography committee so that Mumbai can be saved from becoming a Muslim Mumbai. The post is dated November 6, 2026. It carries the hashtag #Demography and tags @BJP4India, @AmitShah and @RSSorg.

Somaiya has also expressed doubt about the current government figures. He has demanded that the state government make official information on birth rates public. He has also demanded that all birth rates be studied, the figures be verified and the official data be put out.

On his demand to the chief minister, Somaiya said a special demography committee should be appointed to examine the Hindu-Muslim ratio figures and the change in Mumbai's population. He has also alleged that there is a ploy to turn Mumbai into a Muslim Mumbai. The figures, claims and allegations are Somaiya's own, made in his post and his demand.
