A fire broke out in the meter room of a building in the Wagle Estate area of Thane West in the early hours of Sunday. The building, named Amar Mahal, is in Shrinagar. The fire was in the meter room on the ground floor.

Three meter boxes were completely burnt. There was no report of anyone being injured.

According to Thane's disaster management authority, the fire was reported at 3:03 am. The building is near the Jain temple in Shrinagar. It has a ground floor, one storey above it and a room on the terrace.

A fire brigade team reached the spot as soon as the call came, along with a rescue vehicle and a fire engine. Disaster management cell staff also arrived in a pick-up vehicle. MSEDCL staff and Shrinagar police were present at the site.

Fire brigade and disaster management cell personnel together put out the fire. It was fully extinguished at around 3:25 am, after which the situation was brought under control.

According to the authority, three meter boxes were completely burnt in the incident, but no one was hurt.

In a separate incident, a fire broke out at around 10:30 am on October 22 in an imitation jewellery shop in Teesri Bhoiwada in Bhuleshwar, Mumbai. On receiving the news, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) fire brigade and several agencies, including Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST), reached the spot and began efforts to control the blaze.

Preliminary information suggests the fire was caused by heat and a short circuit. The fire was spreading slowly, so efforts to stop it spreading further were stepped up. As a precaution, BEST officials cut the power supply. Electricity was also switched off in the surrounding area to reduce further electrical hazards and keep those fighting the fire safe.

A worker said, "I live in Dombivli and my shop is on the fourth floor of this building. When I reached at around 11:05 am, I saw that there was a fire." According to him, a poster on the lower floor caught fire and the flames travelled upwards from there. He said they do jewellery work and gold work.

Full details of the extent of the damage, whether anyone was injured and the cause of the fire are yet to emerge.
